Chisholme Institute, Scotland, is not affiliated with any specific religion, but it does have a strong focus on God. It offers different types of retreats, from weekend to multiple consecutive weeks, as well as volunteer opportunities (for a fee). I can personally recommend it.

Dzogchen Beara is a Tibetan Buddhist Retreat center on the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland. They offer a year-round program of retreats, seminars, workshops, and professional training. The community is part of Rigpa, an international network of Buddhist centers dedicated to making the Buddhist teachings of meditation, compassion, and wisdom available to the modern world. Recommended by a personal friend.

Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, VA, is great for personal quiet breaks and writing! Basic en suite rooms are clean and comfortable. The setting is beautiful, and simple meals are cooked for you by loving volunteers. You can also participate in the monks’ evensong and certain prayer times. I worked on a draft of my memoir here.

Iona Community in Scotland on the inner Hebridean Isle of the same name is a Christian ecumenical community of people who seek to live out the Gospel in a way that is radical, inclusive, and relevant to life in the 21st century. Awesome place, if you can tolerate the harsh weather. I can personally recommend it.

Kagyu Samye Ling Buddhist Monastery in Scotland, offers instruction in Buddhist philosophy and meditation within the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. It is also a center for the preservation of Tibetan religion, culture, medicine, art, architecture, and handicrafts. I have visited a few times but never stayed. One dear friend of mine helped establish Samye Ling many years ago.

Retreat Guru is “the world’s largest collection of authentic wellness retreats.” Use their search engine to find one that suits your goal (yoga, meditation, spirituality, wellness, adventure, creativity).

Southern Dharma Retreat Center in the North Carolina mountains near Hot Springs provides a place of refuge and a sacred container for spiritual practices of Noble Silence, meditation, reflection, and mindful awareness. All levels of practitioners welcome. You can also volunteer here for a spell. Recommended by a friend.

Taize in France comes highly recommended by a few people I know. In particular they are known for a gathering of young people during summer, who engage in spiritual study and music. Retreaters of all ages are welcome year-round at a variety of programs.

Well for the Journey, located in Towson, MD, is a nonprofit organization that encourages and supports spiritual wellness in a community of small groups of men and women. They are not associated with a specific religion or faith community.
